From Reflection to In-Flection

Thinking is most often understood as reflection: the subject stands before the object, directs itself toward it and circles around it, determines it, compares it, classifies it, and passes judgment upon it. Reflection thus makes the object into a content of knowledge, yet it can remain entirely external to that which it seeks to know. It translates the object into its own categories and returns it to the subject as something already determined by the subject’s manner of thinking.

Such reflection is neither superfluous nor false. Without it there would be no concept, no differentiation, and no ordered experience. Its limit appears only when it begins to regard its own forms as the forms of the thing itself — when it forgets that it may first have adapted what it knows to itself. The object is then no longer allowed its own inner mobility; it becomes that concerning which the subject possesses knowledge.

The expression in-flection attempts to designate a different movement of thinking. The hyphen in the word is not merely a graphic distinction. It marks the bending of thinking toward the inner form of the object: thinking interiorizes the thing and attempts to produce it anew within itself. It no longer returns to itself bearing a content it possesses, but allows the encounter with the content to transform it.

In-flection is therefore neither a withdrawal into psychological inwardness nor an abandonment of the concept in favor of indeterminate feeling or intuition. The thing does not disappear into the subject. On the contrary, within the immanence of thinking it must hold precisely as other. Thinking is truly receptive only when it does not annul what it receives, but allows it to act within thinking through its own determination.

Receptivity here is not passivity. To receive the other already means to be affected by it, and to be affected means to be re-formed in accordance with it. In this event, the noetic and the noematic do not exist as two completed sides that would only subsequently enter into relation. The act of comprehension and the meaningful validity of what is comprehended arise within the same activity. Noetic elaboration is therefore neither an a priori schematism, an algorithm, nor a mechanical procedure: freedom belongs to intelligibility itself, and its outcome cannot be calculated in advance.

The path from reflection to in-flection is at the same time a path toward a different thinking of the Absolute, of Being itself. The Absolute no longer appears as the highest object set over against thinking, nor as an apophatic Nothing in which every determination is extinguished. It is not the inert substratum of “reality,” but the living capacity for self-determination, self-formation, and self-return through otherness. Its absoluteness is not an immobility beyond the finite, but the power to remain present in every determination as the source of its emergence and transformation.

In-flection would thus be an attempt by thinking consciously to repeat the self-production already enacted by the immanent-intelligible plasticity of is-ness in the genesis of reality. It seeks not merely to describe what is, but, in its own movement, to become receptive to the act by which anything at all is. Here begins the possibility of speculative knowledge: not as the possession of the Absolute, but as conscious participation in its self-differentiation and return.
