The Absolute is not a mystery to itself because its powers of self-cognition are limited in principle. It is a mystery for itself because its “in-itself” is not some completed Something waiting to be known, but a plasticity of is-ness that, while remaining immanent to each of its determinations, never ceases, in any of its forms, to be an active potency for other self-formations. The Absolute is therefore a “non-something”: it is not a being among beings, nor even the highest being, yet neither is it nihil absolutum. It exists as the immanent power by which it determines and forms itself, and transcends every form it has already brought forth.
